Mesh and Wireless Networking
Here is an interesting article on Mesh and Wireless networking.
Recently in Tuscany we designed and implemented a wireless network to enable a small cluster of homes access to the internet. Tuscany as you may know is hilly with small fairly remote hilltop homes. Telecom in Italy isn’t great with large costs in bringing services (such as telecom, gas, etc) from the main road to the consumer (the consumer foots the bill btw).
With the right equipment you can cover 3 KM with standard wireless and a local neighbour within that distance had a decent telephone line capable of ADSL. Placing a small router and a special directional antenna there – and another at the cluster of homes – we enabled wireless networking and telephony (VoIP).
The implementation cost was 25% of what it would cost to bring a telephone cable from the main road to the house.
If you’re interested in learning more about what and how we implemented it – drop me an email.
